Tree and Shrub Planting

The Power of Plantings in Landscape Design

Nothing softens the hard edges and straight lines of stone and block like a well-designed planting. Adding living plant material to non-living structures brings essential balance to the landscape. While Rye Beach Landscaping is well-known for expert stone wall building and patio construction, our passion and proficiency in plant-based landscape design is sometimes overlooked. In truth, our “roots” in New Hampshire landscaping run even deeper than our hardscaping services.

The Science Behind Successful Plantings

More than 20 years ago, our owner Bennett Holmes graduated from the University of Vermont with a B.S. in Urban Forestry and Landscape Horticulture, plus a minor in Soil Science. With this strong foundation, plant knowledge and careare front and center in all employee training. Our landscape installation crew is well-trained in proper planting techniques, pruning, plant identification, and overall plant health care—including how to spot and diagnose sick plants.

We take great care to prepare planting beds for long-term success. We use our own composted topsoil and add a root stimulant to each planting hole before installing trees and shrubs. These extra steps are key to long-term plant health and thriving landscapes.

Locally Sourced, Native Plants

Whenever possible, our landscape designer incorporates native plant species into your design. All of our plant material—trees, shrubs, and perennials—is sourced from trusted local nurseries. We strongly believe in supporting the New England economy. Just as we love repurposing old granite and stone, our horticultural crew also seeks out mature plants that can be relocated and reused in a new landscape. In fact, our Exeter facility often feels like an “orphanage for unwanted plants!”

Can It Be Moved?

What could be more local than your own yard? Before we cut anything down, we always ask: Can this be transplanted? If we believe a mature tree or shrub can be successfully moved, we’ll recommend giving it a new home in a more suitable spot. Many plants are originally placed where they can’t grow to their full potential. By saving and reusing existing plant material, we help preserve your investment and make the most of your existing landscape.

Instant Landscape – No Waiting Required

When you don’t have time to wait a decade for a tree or hedge to grow in, Rye Beach Landscaping offers a solution: full-size tree and hedge installation. We have the equipment and expertise to manage large tree plantings—including trees up to 20 feet tall. The larger the plant, the more complex the installation and the higher the risk. That’s why it’s important to trust your landscape investment to professionals who prioritize plant health and success from the start.
